Mauritius Transportations

Mauritius had an estimated 2,066 km of roads in 2009, all of which were paved. As of 2000, there were 28,200 commercial vehicles and 77,000 private passenger cars.

There are no railways in Mauritius. There were previously industrial railways, but these have been abandoned. System existed from 1860s to 1960s. To cope with increasing road traffic congestions, a metro system was proposed in 2007; it has yet to be built.

In 1999 the Port Louis harbour completed a major expansion and modernisation. In 2010, Mauritius has three merchant ships in service.

There were five airports in 2010, only two of which had paved runways. The country's major airport is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, which is the main base of the national airline, Air Mauritius and privately owned Tormair. Air Mauritius provides about four flights weekly to Rodrigues, as well as, over 40 weekly international flights. In early 2001, Air Mauritius concluded an alliance with Delta Airlines. Other major airlines serving Mauritius are Air France, British Airways, Air India, Air Zimbabwe, Lufthansa (Condor), Singapore Airlines and South African Airways. In 2001, 996,500 passengers were carried on scheduled domestic and international flights.
